North Dakota’s oil boom brought a wave of new residents to the western part of the state, and with them came a sharp rise in truck traffic and the semi-truck accidents that follow. O’Keeffe O’Brien Lyson Attorneys, based at 720 Main Ave in Fargo, published this driving safety guide after noting that North Dakota’s fatality rate has run significantly higher than the national rate for the past decade, with 122 fatal car crashes and 136 fatalities recorded in 2014 alone, including 248 crashes in highway work zones.
The firm cites North Dakota Department of Transportation 2013 crash data showing pickups, vans, utility vehicles, trucks, and truck tractors accounted for 69 percent of the state’s fatal crashes that year, with a fatality rate of 1.47 compared to the national rate of 1.11. Alcohol, drugs, or medication were a factor in 76 of 133 fatal crashes, and speed contributed to 36 of them. McKenzie County recorded the greatest number of fatal crashes in 2013, and Williston had the most reported crashes among cities outside Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, and Minot.
The firm’s attorneys, including Tim O’Keeffe, Tatum O’Brien, and Tracy Lyson, represent clients injured in truck and car accidents across North Dakota. Prospective clients can call 701-235-8000 or the firm’s toll-free line at 877-235-8002 to discuss a personal injury claim.
